Quotes & Ordering

  • How long will it take to make my benchtop?

Production of your stone benchtop usually takes 5-10 working days from final check measure, but often we can do it sooner than this.

Our estimators will let you know our current lead times at the time of quoting. If timing is critical on your job, please let us know during the quoting stage and we’ll advise whether it is achievable before we proceed.

  • Why do some stone brands & colours cost more than others?

Slabs. The price of a stone slab depends mainly on the process required to prepare it for use. Some types of natural stone can work out cheaper than man-made stone, despite the common assumption that natural stone is more expensive. This is because Natural Stone requires less processing than re constituted stone other factors that make some more expensive than others are its rarity, popularity and the distance it had to travel to get here.

Within each stone brand there are usually 4-5 different levels of pricing, from a ‘standard’ range right up to a ‘deluxe’ or ‘exclusive’ range.

Labour. The least-expensive edge profile is a 20mm pencil round, this is because most slabs come in 20mm to begin with. Other factors that will affect the labour cost are,  mitred edges, cut-outs, complexity of the job etc.

  • Can I order the stone benchtop by itself, without installation?

Normally the best person to install the benchtop is the stonemason that created it, however if you’d prefer to use your own installer, you can. Simply specify on your quote request and we’ll give you a supply only price.

Colours & Design

  • Where will the joins be and will they be noticeable?

We always try to make best use of the stone slabs, keeping the need for joins  to a minimum without compromising the integrity of the stone piece. Our stonemasons here at Amalgamated Stone Pty Ltd are highly skilled at joining, book matching and mixing precise glue colours so that your joins are virtually undetectable.

  • How many stone slabs will my benchtop need to use?

Our Professional Stonemasons will accureatly quote, measure and plan the layout. Ensuring a supior finish. We endeavour to make the best use of space arranging all piceses. To sit snug onto the slabed area. This not only cuts down on any wastage but also saves you money

  • Layered vs mitred edge, which is best?

For aesthetic reasons, mitred edge joins are generally better as the join line is less noticeable, being positioned right through the 90° corner edge of the stone. While Layered joins offer greater corner strength they are more noticeable than mitred edge joins, positioned in the middle of the flat surface. In saying that, our  professional stonemasons are nothing short of amazing when it comes to joining stone so even a layered join will be hardly noticeable on your benchtop.  NOTE: Layered joins work best on colours with a consistent, fine grain.  i.e. The larger the detail, the more noticeable a layered join will be. Speak to a member of our team here at Amalgamated Stone Pty Ltd who can recommend the best option based on your chosen colour.

  • Is it safe to have a mitred join on a waterfall edge?

    Yes

  • What is book matching?

Bookmatching is the practice of matching two (or more) wood or stone surfaces, so that the two adjoining surfaces mirror each other, giving the impression of an opened book. This is only considered when the chosen stone has a strong vein pattern through it, like calacatta.  Book matching may incur additional costs and is not always possible due to various factors so always check with your stonemason first.

  • Can I see the different surface and colour options before choosing?

Yes, you can. We have a showroom in 46 Quinn Street Preston displaying  reconstituted stone and brands like Caesarstone, Smartstone, Essa Stone, Quantum Quartz, Silestone, Natural Stone, and Lithostone,  where you can visit us 6 days a week Mon-Sat. our  factory is located at 46 Quinn Street Preston or  call us on (03) 9416 8666 to discuss.

  • What is an 'overhang'?

An overhang is an area of the stone benchtop that is floating or that extends without cabinetry beneath it. A good example of this is a breakfast bar area that is commonly used on L-shape benches and island benches/counters, where you have leg room underneath to sit on chairs or stools.

  • What is the largest overhang I can have without the need for extra support?

The maximum recommended overhang area is 300mm deep. This can be increased to 450mm as long as you have supports every 600mm.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • What's the best way to clean my stone benchtop?

For all types of surfaces like Natural stone and engineered stone generally a clean, damp cloth will do the trick. For more stubborn stains, use a few drops of non-bleach, non-abrasive, neutral PH stone cleaner available at most hardware stores like bunnings , or a small amount of mild liquid dishwashing detergent mixed with warm water.

For best results, use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces.

NOTE: Some manufacturers like Caesarstone or Smart Stone will send you a complimentary cleaning kit with cream cleaner included, when you register your warranty online. Check manufacturer’s websites for details.

  • Can I put hot pots and pans directly onto my stone benchtop?

This is not recommended for any natural or reconstituted stone benchtop as the sudden change in temperature can cause it to react and either stain (burn), fracture or crack.

Neolith, on the other hand, is 100% heat proof. You can take a roasting hot pan out of the oven, put it directly on your Neolith benchtop – and absolutely nothing will happen to it.
